Whether it’s the awakening of nature, the rejuvenation of the motherland, the vitality of life, or the vigorous development of his career, Li Qun’s soul is filled with longing and memories of spring. In this charming artwork “Spring”, Li Qun presents a vivid scene adorned with clear blue skies, fluffy white clouds, and vibrant tree buds. Birds sing in the sky, and the earth is full of vitality. A group of joyful children, led by a teacher, walks along a path, passing by Li Qun sitting on a bench. This scene depicts a hopeful future for the Republic, evoking a shared optimistic spirit among viewers. In his youth, Li Qun harboured a vague longing for the Yellow River, which grew stronger in adulthood as he encountered the strains of the “Yellow River Cantata”. Throughout his revolutionary journey, he traversed the landscapes along the river’s banks. Following significant events like the Japanese surrender in 1945, Li Qun crossed the Yellow River multiple times, sketching scenes from its banks, particularly at Qikou in Linxian County, Qianshan Mountain. In 2003, at the age of 91, Li Qun transformed these sketches into “Flowers of the Yellow River” imbuing it with emotional resonance and symbolism. This painting, adorned with apricot blossoms and evoking the essence of spring, reflects his lifelong connection and aspirations linked to the Yellow River. Creating such a masterpiece during the era of reform and opening up is a testament to Li Qun’s profound artistic depth, challenging viewers to fully comprehend its implications.

Li Qun’s woodcuts particularly “Pine Forest” are significant expressions of his enduring creativity and passion for art amidst the challenges of ageing. Despite entering old age, Li Qun’s vitality defied his chronological years, as evidenced by numerous commemorations and celebrations marking his milestones. His unwavering commitment to his craft led to the creation of notable works such as “Pine Forest” amidst ongoing endeavours in writing, painting, and publishing. These woodcuts, including “Pine Forest,” “Rose,” “Winter Branches,” and others, exemplify his dedication to capturing the essence of life through art. With each piece, Li Qun continued to explore themes of beauty, vitality, and the passage of time, leaving behind a rich artistic legacy that transcends age.
