Li Qun, a native of Lingshi, Shanxi is a prominent figure in the realms of Chinese woodcuts and literary criticism. His artistic journey began at the National Hangzhou Art College (now the China Academy of Art) in 1931, a time when the influence of Lu Xun spurred a flourishing interest in emerging woodcut techniques. Motivated by this cultural fervour, Li Qun co-founded the “Muling Woodcut Research Society” in 1933, marking his entry as a pioneering force in China’s printmaking movement.
Seventy years on, Li Qun’s spirit continues to shape the landscape of Chinese printmaking, symbolised by his enduring presence amidst the ever-evolving artistic currents. In 2003, Li Qun generously donated a selection of 63 representative works to the China Academy of Art, enriching the institution’s teaching and research. This compilation booklet celebrates Li Qun’s artistic legacy, offering a glimpse into his masterful woodcuts artistry.
